Version File (VF)
Definition
A Version File, also known as a VF Package or VF Composition, is a name applied to a partial Composition in digital cinema distribution. This Composition is intended to utilize Track Files of an Original Version (OV) Composition. The VF Package acts as an Asset Package and contains files intended to be paired and used with an OV Package. Different compositions, representing versions of a title intended for distribution in different countries or formats, may have different Sound Track Files or Picture Track Files that can be shared among versions to promote efficiency. Each version of a title will have a unique Composition Playlist (CPL) that defines and orchestrates the playback of these files in the Composition. A VF is not a complete package and requires the corresponding Original Version (OV) to be playable.
Purpose
The VF is used to efficiently create and distribute multiple versions of a film without duplicating the entire DCP:
- Dubbed language versions
- Subtitle versions
- Censored or region-specific edits
- Accessibility adaptations
Operating Principle
A VF includes only the elements that differ from the original:
- New audio MXF files (e.g., different language)
- Subtitle files
- Optional modified picture segments The VF’s Composition Playlist (CPL) references:
- Shared assets from the OV (e.g., video)
- Additional or replacement assets from the VF Both OV and VF must be present on the cinema server for playback.
Technical Structure
| Component | Description |
| Dedicated CPL | Defines the version |
| References to OV | Uses existing assets |
| Additional assets | New audio, subtitle, or picture files |
| PKL (Packing List) | Lists only VF-specific assets |
Comparison with OV
| Feature | OV (Original Version) | VF (Version File) |
| Content | Complete DCP | Supplementary content |
| Dependency | مستقل | Requires OV |
| Storage | Larger | Smaller |
| Role | Base version | Variant |
Typical Use Cases
- Multi-language releases
- Subtitle variations
- Airline or broadcast edits
- Regional adaptations
Limitations
- Cannot be used without the corresponding OV
- Requires correct asset referencing
- Increases management complexity for multiple versions
Summary
The Version File is a key concept in the DCP workflow for efficiently managing multiple versions of a film. It allows reuse of existing assets and significantly reduces storage and distribution requirements.
