CRU

A CRU Carrier, also known as a CRU drive, is a type of removable hard drive that is commonly used in the digital cinema industry for the distribution of digital content. The term "CRU" is actually a brand name, but it's often used as a generic term for this type of removable hard drive in the same way that "kleenex" is used to refer to facial tissues. CRU is known for their hard drives' durable design and reliable performance, which makes them ideal for the large-scale, high-speed data transfers that are common in the cinema industry. In the context of digital cinema, CRU Carriers are often used to distribute Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs), which contain the digital files for a movie. After the DCP has been created, it's transferred to a CRU drive. The drive is then physically shipped to the movie theater where it's loaded into the cinema's digital projection system. The use of removable hard drives like CRU carriers for DCP distribution is gradually being replaced by satellite and broadband internet delivery methods such as Signiant Media Shuttle in some regions. However, in areas where network infrastructure is less robust, physical delivery of CRU drives remains a common practice.
